Enamel pins – also known as lapel pins – are small works of art made of metal and paint. They adorn jackets, bags, backpacks, or caps and are much more than just a trend. But how exactly is an enamel pin made? In this article, we'll show you the manufacturing process step by step.
1. Design & Idea
The design comes first. Enamel pins are usually created as vector graphics, as this allows for clean lines. Important elements include:
- clear contours
- limited color areas
- the desired pin size
The lines in the design later become the raised metal edges of the pin.
2. Metal molds & dies
The design is transferred onto a metal plate – usually made of zinc alloy, brass, or iron. The shape is then stamped out using a die-cutting tool.
This results in:
- the basic shape of the pin
- raised metal lines between the colored areas
These lines give the enamel pin its typical structure.
3. Electroplating (metal coating)
Now the pin receives its metallic color. The surface is coated using an electroplating process, for example with:
- Gold
- Silver
- Black (Black Nickel)
- copper
This coating protects the pin and determines its final appearance.
4. Coloring with enamel
Now color comes into play. The individual surfaces are filled with liquid enamel by hand or machine.
There are two common variants:
- Soft enamel pins: slightly recessed color areas
- Hard enamel pins: smooth polished surface
After coloring, the enamel is hardened, usually by heating.
5. Polishing & Finishing
Depending on the pin type, the surface is polished. Hard enamel pins, in particular, acquire a smooth, high-quality feel as a result.
Further finishing options are available, such as:
- glitter
- Glow-in-the-Dark
- transparent colors
6. Attachment mechanism & quality control
Finally, the fastener is attached to the back, e.g.:
- Butterfly clasp
- Rubber plugs
- Safety lock
This is followed by a quality control check: Each enamel pin is inspected before it is packaged and shipped.
Conclusion
The production of an enamel pin is a precise process that combines design, craftsmanship, and technology. This is precisely what makes pins so special – every little detail counts.
Whether as a collector's item, fashion accessory or branded product: enamel pins are durable, individual and real eye-catchers.
