Lacrimosa - Lament | Album Review

The Monumental Finale of an Exceptional Trilogy

With Lament, Lacrimosa release their 15th studio album and at the same time conclude a musical journey that began in 2017 with Testimonium and continued in 2021 with Leidenschaft. The work marks the end of the so-called Storm Trilogy and combines the central themes of recent years: loss, longing, transience, hope, and the search for inner peace.

After over 35 years of band history, Tilo Wolff and Anne Nurmi achieve something remarkable: instead of relying on their legendary status, they deliver one of the most ambitious, emotional, and at the same time most modern albums of their entire career.

Song Analysis

The album's centerpiece is the over 10-minute title track Lament. After just a few minutes, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary album opening.

The song begins restrained and vulnerable before gradually building to a powerful orchestral climax. Piano, strings, choirs, and rock instruments merge into a composition that is more reminiscent of a modern symphony than a classic gothic metal song.

Particularly impressive is the dynamic. Between quiet passages and monumental outbursts, an emotional tension is created that captivates the listener for the entire duration.

With Avalon, the band presents one of the album's most accessible songs. The title combines modern production with classic Lacrimosa elements and quickly develops into one of the most catchy tracks on the release. Orchestral elements paired with dark spoken word create a captivating atmosphere. The pre-release already generated considerable attention within the gothic and dark wave scene.

Songs like Ein langer Weg, Du bist alles was ich will, or In einem anderen Leben deal with loss and longing, yet do not lose sight of hope. This emotional contrast, in particular, lends a special depth to the album.

Particularly In einem anderen Leben surprises with an almost nostalgic lightness that some might associate with 1980s pop melodies. Nevertheless, the emotional seriousness typical of Lacrimosa remains present at all times.

Conclusion

Lacrimosa achieves an impressive conclusion to their Storm Trilogy. The album combines the emotional power of Testimonium, the passion of its namesake predecessor, and the entire experience of over 3 decades of band history into a monumental work.

Not every song reaches the genius of earlier classics like Alleine zu zweit, Copycat, or Stolzes Herz, but as a complete work, Lament convinces across the board. The blend of melancholy, hope, orchestral grandeur, and emotional honesty makes the album one of the most significant gothic releases of 2025.

Certain melodies and structures are reminiscent of earlier works, and the band sometimes relies too heavily on familiar patterns, but the emotional impact and high quality are undeniable.

Those looking for emotional music with orchestral grandeur and profound lyrics will find one of the strongest gothic albums of recent years here.
