The Album That Redefined Modern Post-Punk
Few albums have had such a lasting impact on the modern darkwave and post-punk scene as Molchat Doma's Этажи (Etazhi). Released in 2018, the Belarusian band's second studio album initially became an insider tip within the underground scene before achieving cult status worldwide. Today, Etazhi is considered one of the most important darkwave albums of the 21st century and a crucial catalyst for the international renaissance of coldwave and post-punk.
With just nine songs and a running time of barely 33 minutes, Molchat Doma create a haunting soundscape of isolation, urban desolation, and existential melancholy.
Who are Molchat Doma?
Molchat Doma was founded in Minsk, Belarus, in 2017. The band consists of vocalist Egor Shkutko, multi-instrumentalist Roman Komogortsev, and bassist Pavel Kozlov. Their debut album С крыш наших домов already brought the group attention within the Eastern European post-punk scene, but it was Etazhi that brought their international breakthrough.
The name "Molchat Doma" translates to "The Houses Are Silent." Hardly any other band name describes the sound so aptly. Their music sounds like concrete, fog, and loneliness in musical form.
The Meaning of Etazhi
"Этажи" means "floors" or "stories." The album title perfectly matches the atmosphere of the record. The songs feel like individual apartments in a massive Soviet housing block. Behind each door lie different stories of loneliness, loss, hopelessness, and longing.
The album cover adds further symbolism. It features the iconic Hotel Panorama in Slovakia, a masterpiece of Soviet-inspired modernist architecture. The building has become inextricably linked with Molchat Doma and has evolved into a symbol of the entire modern post-punk movement.
Feeling
Musically, the band moves between post-punk, coldwave, new wave, darkwave, and synth-pop. The production remains deliberately minimalist and slightly lo-fi, yet sounds significantly more refined than on the debut album. Dominant elements include cold synthesizers, monotonous drum machines, hypnotic basslines, and Egor Shkutko's deep, detached, almost absent vocals. There are no superfluous arrangements, no unnecessary effects, and no musical experiments. Every bassline, every synthesizer, and every drum machine sequence serves solely the atmosphere.
This consistency makes the album a cohesive work of art. There is practically no weak song and no moment that pulls the listener out of Molchat Doma's gloomy world.
Many compare their sound to Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, or early Clan of Xymox. However, Molchat Doma create a unique blend of Western post-punk tradition and Eastern European melancholy.
Particularly impressive is the band's ability to create an oppressive mood, even though many songs remain danceable. It was precisely this combination that later made the album a worldwide cult phenomenon.
The Strongest Songs
На дне (Na Dne)
The opener immediately sets the album's direction. Driving bass, cold synthesizers, and a hypnotic rhythm create an atmosphere between hopelessness and departure.
Танцевать (Tancevat)
One of the album's catchiest songs. Despite its danceable nature, the underlying mood remains melancholic and detached.
Фильмы (Filmy)
A prime example of Molchat Doma's ability to combine nostalgia and isolation. The melody feels both familiar and alien at the same time.
Волны (Volny)
An atmospheric highlight with particularly strong synthesizer pads. The song remains one of the band's most popular tracks to this day.
Тоска (Toska)
The title means "longing" or "melancholy" and perfectly describes the album's emotional core. Hardly any other song encapsulates the essence of Molchat Doma so accurately.
Судно (Sudno)
The band's most famous song and one of the most important darkwave tracks of the last decade. The piece is based on a poem by Russian poet Boris Ryzhy and gained worldwide recognition through TikTok in 2020. The song reached millions of listeners and made Molchat Doma international stars overnight.
The popularity of Sudno led countless new listeners to discover darkwave and post-punk for the first time.
Why Etazhi Achieved Cult Status
The impact of Etazhi extends far beyond the music. The album became the soundtrack for the "doomer" culture on the internet. The themes of isolation, alienation, and anxiety about the future resonated particularly with young people worldwide.
While many modern post-punk bands merely look back nostalgically to the eighties, Molchat Doma achieved something special: they created music that feels timeless yet reflects the anxieties of younger generations. This is precisely why the album is as powerful today as it was upon its release.
Conclusion
Anyone who has discovered coldwave, darkwave, or post-punk and wants to know which album has most influenced the scene in recent years cannot ignore Etazhi.
Этажи (Etazhi) is far more than just a successful darkwave album. It is a cultural phenomenon that has shaped an entire generation of listeners and played a decisive role in the international post-punk renaissance. Molchat Doma create a sound world here that is simultaneously cold, beautiful, desolate, and fascinating.
