Nachtmahr – IMPERIVM Review: Between Aggression, Control, and Atmosphere

With IMPERIVM, Nachtmahr releases its eleventh studio album in 2026. The project by Thomas Rainer, which has been one of the most influential representatives of the German-speaking Aggrotech and Industrial genres for years, remains true to its uncompromising style. At the same time, the new work shows that Nachtmahr continues to develop musically without abandoning its identity.

But can IMPERIVM live up to classics like Feuer Frei!, Veni Vidi Vici or Feindbild? We've listened to the album extensively.

Who is Nachtmahr?

Nachtmahr was founded in 2007 by Austrian musician Thomas Rainer, who was already known to many fans through L'Âme Immortelle. Musically, the project moves between:

  • Aggrotech
  • Industrial
  • Electronic Body Music (EBM)
  • Dark Electro
  • Martial Industrial

Typical for Nachtmahr are hard beats, military rhythms, catchy synthesizers and provocative imagery. Thomas Rainer has emphasized for years that the martial aesthetic is an artistic stylistic device and does not convey a political message.

The Sound: Classic Nachtmahr with Modern Production

The very first seconds of Wer Wind sät make it clear where the journey is going.

Massive kickdrums. Powerful basslines. Military-sounding percussion. Dominant synthesizers. Thomas Rainer's distinctive voice.

Fans of earlier albums will immediately feel at home.

Nevertheless, IMPERIVM sounds more modern than many predecessors. The production appears significantly cleaner, more spacious, and more powerful. Every beat is precise, which should work excellently in the club.

Harder than Verboten!?

The previous album Verboten! relied heavily on uncompromising hardness.

IMPERIVM takes a slightly different path. Although the music remains aggressive, it also seems more thought-out and varied.

Pounding club tracks alternate with atmospheric passages again and again. This creates a pleasant tension that keeps the entire album interesting.

The Strongest Songs

Wer Wind sät

A perfect album opener.

The song immediately builds pressure and quickly develops into a classic Nachtmahr track with enormous club potential.

Unterwerfung

Hard beats and catchy hooklines dominate here.

This track is likely to quickly become a staple of future live shows.

Stärker als ihr Hass

One of the most emotional songs on the album.

Despite all its harshness, the title conveys a clear message of resilience and determination.

Offenbarung

One of the longest songs on the album.

More atmosphere, slower development, and a successful build-up of tension make it one of the most interesting tracks on the record.

Neue Ufer

A worthy conclusion.

The song feels almost hymnic and ends the album with surprisingly much depth.

Production at the Highest Level

The production is clearly one of IMPERIVM's greatest strengths.

Particularly convincing are:

  • powerful bass
  • clear vocals
  • balanced synthesizers
  • powerful kickdrums
  • excellent mastering

Especially on high-quality speakers or headphones, the album unfolds its full effect.

Are there any weaknesses?

IMPERIVM is not entirely without criticism.

Those who wished for significant stylistic experiments or a radical new beginning will hardly find them here. Nachtmahr consistently remains true to its musical direction.

For long-time fans, however, this is more of an advantage than a disadvantage.

Our Verdict

With IMPERIVM, Nachtmahr delivers exactly the album many fans expected.

The songs are powerful, danceable, and excellently produced.

Nachtmahr succeeds in combining classic elements of its own sound with modern production.

The album has hardly any weaknesses and reveals more and more details with repeated listening.

Those who love Industrial, Aggrotech, or EBM will find one of the strongest Nachtmahr albums of recent years here.
