XOTOX - Documentation II: Remix | Album Review

Overview
XOTOX releases Dokumentation II: Remix, a multifaceted remix album, 20 years after the album Dokumentation I: Ton. It serves as an anniversary sequel to the classic, uniting greats from Electro, Darkwave, Industrial, Techno, and EBM who reinterpret XOTOX classics. Instead of a nostalgic look back, a reinterpretation emerges that shows how relevant and versatile the XOTOX sound still is in 2026.
The Band
Since the late 1990s, XOTOX, Andreas Davids' industrial project, has been one of the most influential names in the German Rhythm’n’Noise and industrial scene. With albums like Lichtlos, In den zehn Morgen or Ich bin da/ich funktioniere, Andreas Davids developed an unmistakable style between machine brutality, hypnotic sequences and emotional gloom, and was the first Rhythm’n’Noise album ever to reach number 1 in the German Alternative Charts (DAC).
XOTOX became known for the combination of aggressive machine rhythms, distorted beats, catchy melodies, and uncompromising hardness. While many acts of the early 2000s opted for future pop or synthpop, XOTOX developed a significantly rawer and more industrial sound. It was precisely this mix of club-friendly sequences, noise elements, and technoid structures that quickly made the project an integral part of the international dark electro and industrial scene.
Feeling
The selection of participating artists reads like a cross-section of modern dark electronic music. From Antibody to Alien Vampires and Das Ich to Cervello Elettronico, Ductape, Thorofon and EXTIZE, each act brings its own signature without losing the core of the originals. This is precisely where the great strength of this album lies.
It is particularly remarkable how organically the different genres merge. Industrial meets Techno, Darkwave meets Post-Punk, and Electro meets classic EBM structures. What might seem like a stylistic risk on paper develops into an astonishingly cohesive listening experience in practice.
Conclusion
With Dokumentation II: Remix, XOTOX succeeds in creating an impressive combination of archival work, artistic development, and scene documentation. The participating artists treat the source material with respect, without sacrificing creative risks and their own style. The result is an album that appeals equally to industrial fans, EBM enthusiasts, techno purists, and darkwave listeners.
Instead of merely celebrating the past, Dokumentation II: Remix proves that the sound of XOTOX has lost none of its relevance even after almost three decades. This album is not only a look back at an extraordinary career, but also a look forward into the future of dark electronic music.
