How to dye your hair at home like a pro
Become a master of DIY hair coloring in just 10 easy steps
What you need to dye your hair like a pro:
- Your chosen hair color (box or jar)
- A mixing bowl and a dye brush
- One or more mirrors
- A hairdresser's cape, towels, newspaper –
anything that prevents hair dye from getting on your clothes or the floor - Latex gloves
- Vaseline or another greasy protective cream
- A pH-neutral, color-protecting shampoo and a matching conditioner.
- Hair clips or hair ties to section your hair
- A disposable shower cap
- A watch, stopwatch, or your phone to measure time
TOP TIP:
If you're planning a drastic color change (e.g., from black to platinum blonde), you should consult a professional colorist. They know exactly how to transition from one shade to another without unnecessarily damaging your hair.
Step 1 – Wash your hair
Wash your hair with a pH-neutral pre-color shampoo before coloring. This creates the best base for the new color. Then, leave your hair towel-dried – it should still be slightly damp.
Important: Do not use conditioner before dyeing! Conditioner closes the hair cuticle, so the dye adheres less well.
Step 2 – Protect yourself and your surroundings
Now it's about protecting yourself, your clothes, and your home as best as possible. Our dyes are long-lasting – great for your hair, but not for your carpet!
Wear old clothes and protect yourself with a hairdresser's cape, towel, or bathrobe. Cover the floor with old towels or newspaper and wear disposable gloves to avoid staining your fingers.
Step 3 – Read the instructions!
We know you can't wait, but please read the instructions for your hair color carefully – even if you have already used Directions.
Step 4 – Do a strand test
First, apply the color to a small, inconspicuous strand of hair. This way you can ensure that the result meets your expectations and that you find the right processing time.
Avoid a color disaster! Check out our guide for the perfect strand test.
Step 5 – Section the hair
To ensure even color coverage, divide your damp hair into at least four sections using hair clips or rubber bands.
There's hardly anything more annoying than discovering uncolored strands in the mirror after dyeing your hair!
Step 6 – Apply color
Use a dye brush to apply the color to your hair – in sections 0.5 to 1 cm thick.
Start at the roots of your hair, as these require the longest processing time. Then distribute the color evenly throughout your hair.
Use the brush instead of the pot directly to ensure even coverage.
Step 7 – Let it take effect
Now you have to wait! The strand test will tell you how long your color needs to develop. Directions hair color typically takes 15 to 30 minutes to process.
Step 8 – Rinse thoroughly
Rinse the paint out with warm water.
Tip: Rinse your hair backwards over the sink and not in the shower – this will prevent your skin from absorbing the color!
Step 9 – Drying and styling
Blow-dry and style your hair however you like. Keep in mind, however, that heat can shorten the lifespan of your hair color .
Step 10 – Voilà, you're glowing!
Congratulations on your new hair color – we knew you could do it! Celebrate your fresh color result with a selfie and share it on Instagram.
TOP TIP:
Depending on your natural hair color, the final result may vary. If you want a very vibrant color, it may be helpful to lighten your hair beforehand. Check out our hair lightening products to create the best base for your desired color.
