Tips and tricks on how to color your hair at home like a pro

How to dye your hair at home like a pro

Become a master of DIY hair dyeing in just 10 simple steps

What you need to dye like a pro:

  • Your chosen hair color (box or tub)
  • A mixing bowl and a dyeing brush
  • One or more mirrors
  • A hairdresser's cape, towels, newspaper –
anything to prevent hair dye from getting on your clothes or the floor
  • Latex gloves
  • Vaseline or another greasy protective cream
  • A pH-balanced, color-safe shampoo and a matching conditioner
  • Hair clips or hair ties to section your hair
  • A disposable shower cap
  • A watch, stopwatch, or your phone for timing

TOP TIP:

If you're planning a drastic color change (e.g., from black to platinum blonde), you should consult a professional colorist. They know exactly how to switch from one shade to another without unnecessarily damaging your hair.

Step 1 – Wash your hair

Before dyeing, wash your hair with a pH-balanced pre-color shampoo. This provides the best base for the new color. Then towel dry your hair – it should still be slightly damp.

Important: Do not use conditioner before dyeing! Conditioner removes natural oils that help the color adhere better.

Step 2 – Protect yourself and your surroundings

Now it's time to protect yourself, your clothes, and your home as much as possible. Our colors are long-lasting – great for your hair, but not for your carpet!

Wear old clothes and protect yourself with a hairdresser's cape, towel, or bathrobe. Cover the floor with old towels or newspaper and wear disposable gloves to avoid staining your fingers.

Step 3 – Read the instructions!

We know you can't wait, but read the instructions for your hair color carefully – even if you've used Directions before.

Step 4 – Do a strand test

First, apply the color to a small, inconspicuous strand of hair. This way, you can ensure that the result meets your expectations and you find the correct processing time.

Avoid a color disaster! Check out our guide for the perfect strand test.

Step 5 – Section your hair

To ensure even color coverage, divide your damp hair into at least four sections using hair clips or elastic bands.

There's hardly anything more annoying than discovering uncolored strands in the mirror after dyeing!

Step 6 – Apply the color

Use a dyeing brush to apply the color to your hair – in sections 0.5 to 1 cm thick.

Start at the roots, as they need the longest processing time. Then distribute the color evenly over all your hair.

Use the brush instead of applying directly from the tub to ensure even coverage.

Step 7 – Let it process

Now it's time to wait! The strand test will tell you how long your color needs. The processing time for Directions hair color is usually 30 minutes.

Step 8 – Rinse thoroughly

Rinse the color out with warm water.

Tip: Rinse your hair backwards over the sink and not in the shower – this prevents your skin from absorbing the color!

Step 9 – Dry and style

Blow-dry and style your hair as you like. However, note that heat can shorten the longevity of the hair color.

Step 10 – Voilà, you're radiant!

Congratulations on your new hair color – we knew you could do it!

TOP TIP:

The color result may vary depending on your natural hair tone. If you want a very vibrant color, it might be a good idea to lighten your hair beforehand. Check out our hair lightening products to create the best base for your desired color.
