How to determine your hair color level
In this article, we'll reveal some secrets of the hair color scale and explain why it's so important to know which shades blend best to achieve your desired hair color.
Find the perfect color for your individual hair tone
You've already set your sights on a stunning new color that will revolutionize your look? Fantastic! But before you apply it generously, it's important to consider your current hair color. Without prior checking, unexpected color clashes or a dull shade that doesn't highlight your hair optimally can occur.
How to accurately determine your hair tone
We have created a color scale from 1 to 10 that helps you classify your current hair tone. Here, 1 stands for very dark hair and 10 for the lightest blonde.
To determine your hair tone most accurately:
- Stand in natural light.
- Select several strands of hair from the top of your head.
- Hold the strands away from your head and examine them in their full length.
- Focus on the color closest to your roots.
- Compare it with our 1-10 color scale.

What does this mean for your new look?
Now that you know your current shade, you can decide if adjustments are needed to achieve the desired color result. Directions colors come out particularly well if your hair is level 9 or 10 on the color scale. The lighter your hair, the more vibrant and intense the new color will be.
If you have blonde hair (level 8-10 on the scale):
The lighter your hair, the more vibrant the color result. This hair color is ideal for a wide range of Directions colors. Our White Toner helps to remove unwanted yellowish tones after bleaching.
Do you want to try darker, deeper colors? Then dye your hair darker gradually and seek professional advice before making drastic changes.
If you have dark blonde to brown hair (level 4-7 on the scale):
A color change is possible, but the color spectrum is limited to darker Directions colors such as:
- Midnight Blue
- Dark Tulip
- Plum
- Alpine Green
- Ultra Violet
For lighter or brighter colors (e.g., our fluorescent Lime Green), you should pre-lighten your hair – either with the Lightening Kit or at a professional salon.
If you have dark hair (level 1-3 on the scale):Without prior lightening, only a few colors will be visible.
The natural hair color can strongly influence the color result.
For vibrant colors, we strongly recommend the Lightening Kit or a hairdresser appointment.
What if you already have colored hair?If you want to dye your hair darker, you can easily apply Directions over existing colors.
BUT BE CAREFUL:
Consider the color wheel, as opposing shades can neutralize each other.
Blue on yellowish hair? Can lead to green tones!
Solution: The Lightening Kit & White Toner provide a neutral base before you apply a new color.
If you are unsure, we always recommend visiting a professional.
Shine with your new hair color! The world of hair colors can be overwhelming. But with these tips and our color scale as a guide, you can make the perfect choice and make your hair shine – healthy and beautiful.
